LITTLE BIG HORN SURVIVOR, RED BEAR Winchester 1873. Serial number: 16689
Red Bear was an Arikara Indian scout for the U.S. 7th Cavalry during the Little Big Horn campaign, Summer 1876. The Winchester 1873 offered here has a production date 1876, it belonged to and was carried by RED BEAR throughout his life.
It is not totally clear if he carried this rifle at LBH, as soldiers and scouts were issued 45-70 and 55-70 TRAPDOOR Springfield rifles and COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY revolvers for the duration of the campaign. On July 25, 1876, RED BEAR and forty Arikara and Rees were ordered by Custer to attack the Sioux and Cheyenne pony heard. As was typical of battles, organization went to hell and RED BEAR and the Arikaka soon found themselves fighting on Reno's line participating in the Cavalry's retreat to the timber line and eventually to the high ground, where they fought for two days. Much of the combat was hand to hand. RED BEAR's LBH experiences are well documented in the published works, " THE ARIKARA NARRATIVES." RED BEAR has placed his name on several places on this carbine using the "TOGIA" picture graph written language of the Plains Indians.
