Port Hudson Relics

"honoring the past by saving it for the future"

Rifles:

TRENCH RECOVERY. This flintlock musket was recently recovered in the Confederate earthworks of the Port Hudson battlefield. It was most definitely Confederate used. Typically the “Rebs” in the trenches were armed with multiple weapons, usually a flintlock or a .69 cal. musket loaded with buck and ball rounds was kept handy in case there was a break in the defensive line and Yankees made it into the works enmasse. The buck and ball round functioned the same way a shotgun round did, it spreads out. There were 3 bucks and 1 .69 cal. musket ball in each round. Additionally, this weapon was recovered with a bayonet, also used in hand to hand combat. Recovered without a stock, which has since deteriorated, it does have a butt plate, bayonet, trigger guard and three stock rings. The lock plate is heavily encrusted with rust which makes the piece one large grouping, seized and corroded into one piece. Future owner if so willing can take a dremal to the piece. The whole piece has been treated with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. It is mounted on a piece of the old roof of the Rist McCallum house, built in 1840 and is the last surviving house on the battlefield at Port Hudson. The house was occupied by both Confederate and Union soldiers. (kb100709) $795
